Code of Conduct
Our commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all participants.
The East Bay High School Hackathon is dedicated to providing a harassment-free and inclusive event experience for everyone regardless of gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, socioeconomic status, body size, ethnicity, nationality, experience level, age, or religion (or lack thereof).
We do not tolerate harassment of event participants in any form. We expect all participants—attendees, organizers, sponsors, mentors, judges, and volunteers—to follow this Code of Conduct during the hackathon and any related events.
Expected Behavior
- Be respectful and inclusive of all participants.
- Listen actively and communicate openly, addressing others in a constructive and positive way.
- Be considerate of your peers and their time and effort.
- Collaborate effectively and help those who are learning.
- Ask for consent before taking photos of others.
- Alert hackathon organizers if you notice someone in distress or violations of this Code of Conduct.
- Follow all venue rules and regulations.
Unacceptable Behavior
The following behaviors are considered harassment and are unacceptable:
- Offensive comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, physical appearance, body size, race, age, religion, or socioeconomic status.
- Unwelcome comments regarding a person's lifestyle choices and practices.
- Deliberate misgendering or use of rejected names.
- Inappropriate physical contact or unwelcome sexual attention.
- Threats of violence or incitement of violence towards any individual or group.
- Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following.
- Harassing photography or recording.
- Sustained disruption of talks or other events.
- Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.
- Plagiarism or using code that was not created during the hackathon (except for open-source libraries and frameworks).
Academic Integrity
All code, design, and assets must be created during the hackathon. You may use publicly available open-source libraries, frameworks, and educational resources, but you must disclose their use. Plagiarism or misrepresentation of work will result in disqualification.
Digital Safety
- Do not share personal information about yourself or others online.
- Be mindful of what you post on social media about the event.
- Do not access unauthorized systems or data.
- Report any security vulnerabilities to the organizers rather than exploiting them.
Consequences of Unacceptable Behavior
Unacceptable behavior from any participant will not be tolerated. Anyone asked to stop unacceptable behavior is expected to comply immediately.
If a participant engages in unacceptable behavior, the hackathon organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, including:
- A verbal or written warning
- Expulsion from the hackathon
- Reporting to school administrators
- Reporting to local law enforcement
Reporting Guidelines
If you are subject to or witness unacceptable behavior, or have any other concerns, please notify a hackathon organizer as soon as possible. You can report issues in the following ways:
- In person to any staff member wearing an organizer badge
- Via email at conduct@eastbayhackers.club
All reports will be handled with discretion. In your report please include:
- Your contact information
- Names (real, nicknames, or pseudonyms) of any individuals involved
- Description of the behavior
- If possible, any relevant records or links (screenshots, photos, etc.)
- Any witnesses who observed the incident
- Any additional information that may be helpful
Addressing Grievances
If you feel you have been falsely or unfairly accused of violating this Code of Conduct, you should notify the event organizers with a concise description of your grievance. Your grievance will be handled in accordance with our existing governing policies.
